Initialism has taken over our social and cultural communications worldwide. Acronyms and abbreviations are so common that often people do not even know what words or phrases are being represented. I designed this original garment to resemble a bowl of alphabet soup using layers of netting in tomato-based colors. The letters are cut in the traditional font of alphabet soup noodles and hand stitched onto the layers of netting. I tried to make T, O, and M “words” in red and orange as tomatoes, L and G “words” are your leafy greens, and random “words” are brown to be mushrooms. Acronyms are abbreviations pronounced as words such as NASA and NATO. Abbreviations are pronounced as the letters themselves such as NFL and FBI. Sometimes, based upon personal experience, there may be multiple meanings per unit as there are only 26 letters in our alphabet. NWS can be the National Weather Service or the National Watercolor Society. The NHS can be the National Health Service or the National Honor Society. Some are newer such as PDS, Potentially Dangerous Situation (weather related) and others are fading away such as DVD. This 2-piece garment, a dress and an oversized bolero jacket displays 206 commonly recognized examples of Initialism. I tried to avoid the units used in texting unless they are deeply embedded within basic communications such as LOL. A list is provided so you can test your knowledge! The headpiece asks a question as well as referencing a 1963 top 10 hit by the Trashmen.
