This is a reversible coat exploring the topic of Immigration. The side shown here uses burlap as the base textile, a fabric often associated with poorer cultures. Appliqued onto the burlap are hand painted faces of various skin tones representing the peoples of the world. Overlaying these faces is a grid that could be interpreted as a net, a chain link fence, or ropes, depending upon your perspective. Cascading from the shoulders (weighing on their shoulders) are found objects representing reasons why people come to America. These reasons are also written on the scrap fabrics located at the shoulders for additional clarification. The unseen inside of this garment is a stylized Statue of Liberty whose right cuff is the torch. Hanging keys are symbolic of opportunities. There is also an American flag recreated using the same skin toned fabrics with the words of the Lazarus poem written in the traditional star field. The unseen interior buttons are faux compasses to guide people from all over the world.
