The second of my COVID coats is seen here. It is made from sheer and light weight remnants rescued from the discard bin of a Chicago textile warehouse. The challenge of the garment was to use every inch of available fabric since additional supplies were unattainable during COVID lockdowns. The cuffs of the coat are the original sleeves of the base dress which was my Mom’s gown for my brother’s wedding in 1987. My inspiration for the repurposed dress itself came from COVID as well. During the early weeks of the lockdown, like many people, we hoarded water bottles. The star pattern on the bottom of Aquafina bottles intrigued me so I kept cutting them off. Eventually the quantity got out of hand and needed to become something besides a garbage bag full of bottle bottoms. The coat needed a companion to offset its transparency so the stars became a skirt. Over 500 bottle bottoms are used here. This garment sounds like falling rain when moving on the runway.
