This coat is in response to two issues. The first being the sometimes seemingly arbitrary choices of the profession’s jury system and the second being the attitude of the public towards the role of the artist as a professional, which is also a type of jury. The text embroidered on the sleeves are questions or comments artists often hear, both hurtful and/or demeaning.
The images on the coat were chosen by me, (as a juror), from catalogues featuring works chosen in juried exhibitions. From the thousands of images available, this time I decided whose work was selected for inclusion and whose work did not meet my standards.
Hand -sewn paper and embroidery floss, neckties and seam binding are used to create this piece.
Embroidered on the sleeves....
My two year old can do that!
What is your real job?
Can you donate a few pieces?
Can you discount it?
Loan us some work for our event décor.
You went to school for that?
Can you make it again, but smaller?
Can you draw my dog? I’ll pay $20.
It is cheaper at TJMaxx.
People come to buy for sure!
Seriously, it is great exposure!
Why would anyone buy this?
I wouldn’t call that real art.
